Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in India. Its trains, stations and workshops need staff at every level of education.
Candidates who have passed Class 8, Class 10 or Class 12 can all find work connected with the railways. The biggest share of these openings comes through government recruitment by Railway Recruitment Boards and Railway Recruitment Cells.
A large amount of railway work is also done on a private and contractual basis at stations and in trains. This page first lists the vacancies open right now, and then explains the regular jobs available at each level.

No direct railway government recruitment for only 8th pass candidates is open at present. The real options at that level are explained in the 8th pass section below.
Railway Jobs for 12th Pass Candidates
For 12th pass candidates, the main government route is the RRB NTPC Under Graduate recruitment. Railway Recruitment Boards conduct it through a Centralised Employment Notice for railway zones across India.
The four posts are Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist and Trains Clerk. These are non-technical posts in stations, booking offices and railway offices.
A Commercial cum Ticket Clerk works at booking counters and issues tickets to passengers. Accounts Clerk cum Typist and Junior Clerk cum Typist handle office records, accounts work and typing work.
A Trains Clerk works in train operations offices and maintains records connected with train running. The minimum qualification for all four posts is Class 12 pass or its equivalent.
In the current CEN 07/2026 cycle, these posts carry initial pay of Rs. 19,900 to Rs. 21,700 under the 7th CPC. Selection is through computer based tests, followed by document verification and a medical examination.
For Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist, typing proficiency in English or Hindi on a computer is also required. This proficiency is tested during the selection process.
Railway Jobs for 10th Pass Candidates
The largest 10th pass recruitment in Indian Railways is the Group D, or Level-1, recruitment. It fills posts such as Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Assistant Pointsman and Assistant or Helper in the electrical, mechanical, signal and other departments.
Track Maintainers look after the upkeep and safety of railway tracks. An Assistant Pointsman helps in changing track points and in shunting work at stations and yards.
Assistant Loco Pilot and Technician posts are filled through separate RRB notifications. These posts generally need Class 10 pass with an ITI certificate in the relevant trade.
The Railway Protection Force also recruits Constables for the security of railway property and passengers. The minimum qualification for an RPF Constable is Class 10 pass.
Railway workshops engage Act Apprentices every year through the Railway Recruitment Cell of each zone. Candidates need Class 10 with at least 50% marks and an ITI certificate in the trade, and selection is on merit without any written exam.
When a Group D notification is issued, selection is normally through a computer based test and a physical efficiency test. Document verification and a medical examination are done at the final stage.
Group D, ALP, Technician and RPF recruitments are held only when a fresh notification is issued. No such notification is open at present, so candidates should keep watching the official RRB and RPF websites.
Railway Jobs for 8th Pass Candidates
Candidates should first know the ground reality at this level. Direct government recruitment in Indian Railways for only 8th pass candidates has now become very rare.
The lowest regular government grade, Group D Level-1, needs a minimum qualification of 10th pass. So at present there is no regular RRB or RRC post that an only-8th-pass candidate can apply for.
One traditional option is the work of licensed porters, called sahayaks, at railway stations. Porters carry the luggage of passengers and work under the licence system of the railway administration.
Most other work at this level comes through private contractors and licensees working at stations. This includes catering and pantry staff, cleaning and housekeeping staff, and stall and vendor staff.
These are private or contractual jobs, not direct railway government jobs. Their pay and working conditions are decided by the contractor or licensee, not by Indian Railways.
Porter licences are issued by the railway administration when a licence vacancy arises at a station. Interested candidates can enquire at the station manager’s office of a major station in their area.
Private and Contractual Jobs in Indian Railways
A large part of the daily work in trains and at stations is handled by private firms under contract. Such openings keep coming up at station and division level during the year.
IRCTC catering and pantry car staff are engaged through the licensee firms that hold the catering contracts. These staff serve food in trains and work in base kitchens and station food outlets.
Cleaning and housekeeping of stations is done by railway contractors at most stations. On Board Housekeeping Services staff and coach attendants in trains are also engaged through private agencies.
Railway public sector companies such as RITES, RailTel and IRCON also engage staff on a contract basis for their projects. Their technical contract posts usually need an ITI or a diploma, while some support posts need lower qualifications.
Candidates should read the terms of any private or contract offer carefully before joining. Working on a railway contract does not make a person a railway government employee.
Contract and licensee staff are hired by the firm itself, mostly through local hiring at the station or unit level. Candidates should never pay any money to any person who promises such a job in return for a fee.
How to Apply for Railway Jobs in India
First, open the official website of the Railway Recruitment Board or Railway Recruitment Cell of your zone. Read the official notification PDF fully before filling any form.
For RRB posts, applications are accepted only on the official portal rrbapply.gov.in. For Act Apprentice posts, apply on the concerned RRC website, or through apprenticeshipindia.gov.in where the notification says so.
Fill the form yourself and pay the fee only through the official website. Keep your registration number and fee receipt safe for the later stages of the process.
Beware of fake websites and agents who promise a railway job in return for money. Railway recruitment is purely merit-based, and no agent can get any candidate selected.
